Senior Research Engineer

R&D

Tartu

Full-time

A Senior Research Engineer in Robotics plays a pivotal role at the intersection of applied research and system engineering. They are responsible for driving the development of advanced robotic capabilities by combining deep theoretical knowledge with practical implementation. This role is focused on solving complex real-world problems through rigorous experimentation, algorithm development, and close collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Сore responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research and Innovation: Conducts in-depth investigations in core robotics domains such as autonomous navigation, manipulation, perception, motion planning, or control. Regularly engages with academic literature to inform design decisions or identify novel approaches.

  • Algorithm Development: Designs, implements, and optimizes algorithms using techniques from robotics, computer vision, and machine learning to enable intelligent behavior in robots.

  • System-Level Integration: Develops robust, modular software systems that interface with hardware components, including sensors, actuators, and embedded controllers, often within ROS-based architectures.

  • Prototyping and Evaluation: Builds and tests robotic prototypes both in simulation and on hardware platforms, applying rigorous metrics to evaluate performance and iterate on designs.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Works closely with hardware, embedded, and software engineering teams to ensure seamless integration and deployment of robotic systems. Also mentors junior engineers and contributes to a collaborative engineering culture.

  • Knowledge Contribution: Brings research insight into practice by summarizing findings from academic papers, conducting original investigations, and authoring internal documentation or external publications when applicable.

    Key Competencies & Skills

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Robotics, Computer Science, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

  • 5+ years of experience in robotics-focused R&D, with a strong track record of solving technical challenges end-to-end.

  • Proficiency in Python and/or C++, ideally within the ROS ecosystem (ROS1 or ROS2).

  • Hands-on experience in areas such as SLAM, control systems, motion planning, perception pipelines, or learning-based methods.

  • Familiarity with core machine learning concepts and how they apply to robotics, such as model training, data processing, or sensor fusion techniques.

  • Comfortable engaging with mathematical modeling and analysis as needed to support algorithmic and system design.

  • Balances scientific rigor with a practical, product-oriented mindset.

  • Self-motivated and comfortable navigating ambiguity in research settings.

  • Strong communicator and collaborator, with a passion for advancing the field of robotics through both innovation and execution.

    Languages Needed:
    English (professional working proficiency)

    Values Alignment:
You resonate with our no-bullshit, high-accountability culture. You’re a builder who thrives in ambiguity, believes in mission-first decisions, and prefers progress over perfection. You want your work to matter—to our team, our product, and the broader context we operate in.
